KS&A 2008 families’ conference update. Many of you are planning to attend the Mile-High Conference on X and Y Chromosome Variations in Denver, CO August 8, 9 and 10, 2008. Registration is now open. Visit KS&A’s website, www.genetic.org, and click on the conference image on the home page to register. This site is being updated regularly, and full registration online, including a credit card link, will be available soon. As you know, airfares are going up every day. I STRONGLY URGE YOU TO BUY YOUR PLANE TICKETS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. A great ticket booking site is www.kayak.com. Kayak is a “meta-search engine” that can search every airline AND virtually ever other travel search site such as Travelocity, Priceline, Expedia, Hotwire and many more. Basic conference schedule for airline ticket planning: • OPTIONAL: Friday has been set aside for informal consults with medical professionals. These are first-come-first-served, so reserve your space as soon as possible. Most consults will cost $25. Consults will start early, so plan to arrive in Denver early. It will take at least one hour (probably at least 90 minutes) from landing to arrival at Children’s Hospital. An alternative would be to arrive on Thursday. Crystal Inn, the conference hotel, has agreed that early arrivers can have the conference rate ($72/night) on Thursday night. • STANDARD ARRIVAL: If you don’t plan to attend the medical consults, then please plan to arrive Friday afternoon/evening, August 8. We’ll have a “getting-to-know-you gathering at the hotel on Friday evening—including a light dinner (pizza and such). • DEPARTURE: The conference concludes with support group meetings on Sunday. These meetings will end by 5:30 PM. If you must leave earlier, presentations will be finished by 3:00 PM. • EVENT-TO-AIRPORT TIMING: Denver International Airport (DIA) is a major hub airport. It’s wise to arrive 2 hours before your flight’s scheduled departure. In most cases, you’ll have time on your hands, but cutting it closer than 90 minutes before departure is risky. They WILL NOT issue a boarding pass if you arrive less than 45 minutes before departure. DIA is a big airport, and you need to take a “subway” to your terminal. Security lines can be as long as 30 minutes—15 minutes in line is common. Ticket counter lines can also be lengthy. Curbside check-in for luggage is generally superior to luggage check-in at the ticket counter. Curbside drop off is one floor BELOW the ticket counters, and then you must come back down one floor to get to the security lines. For those who can walk at least ¼ mile or more, there is a second security line for Terminal A only. Learn about DIA here: www.flydenver.com In other words, select your departure time accordingly. You should be ON YOUR WAY TO THE AIRPORT 2 ½ hours before your departure. |
